A Sneaky Peek …

Not been here before? Why don’t you take a virtual tour round all three levels of our beautiful Studio. Click on the numbers on the right-hand side to move up through the Studio, follow the arrows on screen to move forward, and click on the arrows on the compass to imagine yourself actually in here and turning around.

The Studio is perfectly located in Inverness city centre, yet with a calming view of the clear River Ness. Sometimes you can see goosanders, herons, seals and the very occasional otter thwarting the salmon fishermen further upstream.

Level 1

Start at our ground floor entrance level with our presses and inking-up areas for intaglio and relief. The gorgeous press near the front desk is an old 19th-century Albion; in its day it would have been used to print the broadsheet pages of the Ross-shire Journal. You will also see our motorised and versatile Takach press which can be used for all processes including stone lithography. The big-wheeled Rochat is a beautiful press for intaglio.

Click to go up the stairs and you will be on the mezzanine,  which is equipped with all sorts of intriguing cutting tools, lithography stones, magnifying glasses, hotplates, aquatint box, acid baths etc. This is an exciting area where all the polishing, filing, cutting and drawing up takes place. On Wednesday mornings you’ll also hear a cacophony of Wise Guys here, drinking coffee while creating their art.

The exhibition you can see in our gallery space on the way up was the FLOW Photofest Open Competition shortlist in 2017, all of which were digitally printed by our Studio Manager John on Level 3 of our Studio.

Level 2

This is our screen room. It is a bright and airy space with perhaps the most stunning window view this side of the River Ness – one of our members calls it ‘the best window in town’. See the two paper screen printing beds and, near the window, the fabric table. Plan chests, a large light exposure unit and a screen washing area and small ‘dark’ room for processing polymer plates. This is where we have our artist talks and presentations. We’ve even had a wedding in here!

Level 3

This is our digital imaging suite with large-format printing facilities and a film and negative scanner. All the Macs have Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom on them for your digital editing work.  We also offer a digital printing service and stock a range of transparencies and high-quality archival photo papers.

Access

We have a lift to all levels of the Studio, and an accessible toilet on the ground floor. There is a smaller toilet on Level 3 which is not wheelchair accessible. There is one disabled parking bay in the lay-by just past the Studio.

So, thanks for taking a sneaky peek … now come for the real-life tour, where if you’re lucky you’ll enjoy a bit of banter too!
