Monocrom – Linocuts, Gravures, Photographs. 28 August – 17 October 2015

Monocrom has come about as the result of a Creative Scotland professional development award. Exploring links between monochrome printmaking and photography, using Cromarty Film Festival as the subject.

Inspired by the work of James Craig Annan, JG Posada and James Ravilious, the project uses linocuts, photogravures and photographs to develop common approaches, especially in the new era of digital imaging.

The intention was to make use of the capabilities of recent technologies, such as digital sensors, printers and polymer materials, in combination with tradition printmaking techniques. The desire was to force the new media to have with sensitivity and soul. Careful sourcing of tools and materials along with developing innovative techniques, show this could be possible.

The reportage of the Film Festival makes use of hand cut lino blocks in the same fashion as a manually controlled digital cameral. Giving an insight into how a linocut printer takes the graphic of that technique to photography.

John gave a talk on his work in the Studio on 28 August 2015 about his work involved in the Monocrom exhibition.
