Kelly Stewart is from Sydney, Australia where she studied Design (Visual Communications) Hons in illustration at the Western Sydney University before moving to the UK to pursue her career and to travel. After graduating from university, she bought a one way ticket to London .With a passion for traditional architecture, Kelly found herself in Edinburgh where the Gothic, Victorian and Georgian architecture provided endless inspiration and she began to create drawings of the city the way she saw it, in all it’s quirky glory.

Kelly joined Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop in 2001 and turned to screenprinting as it was a technique she remembered fondly from her degree days. Kelly began screenprinting as a way of printing and editioning her drawings of the city. These early works are mostly 1-2 colours. It wasn’t long before further exploration of the process inspired Kelly to incorporate layers of texture and mark making with the drawings. By 2005 Kelly was screenprinting up to 25 layers in an individual image, building up the layers of tone like a painting.

Kelly works in the  screenprint medium to this day as it enables her to combine  her drawings, mark making, textures, and handwritten text into a single image.

This month celebrates 25 years since Kelly’s arrival to the UK and this collection of screenprints shows the progress of her Edinburgh cityscapes throughout that period including her earliest multi layered screenprint.

This collection of screenprints not only highlights the shift in Kelly’s style but also the changing city through the documentation in images.
